“My parents will be home from 6. You know the address. See you there,” he said gently, and with that, stepped out the door.

Alex, with the child in her arms, only gave a nod, and dizzily gazed after him. She was unable to move. Her body parts wouldn’t obey. What was this? What was that about? Could it be, that Nate had just confessed love to her?

When she glanced at her watch, Alex could hardly believe that it was already six in the evening. Lucca required 100 percent of her attention, even if he was a very pleasant and easy-to-handle two-year-old, compared to the average. They swallowed the last of their snack, then Alex began to fold the blanket on which they had been having their picnic in the park. As she put the child into the car, she realised with a contented smile that he was absolutely exhausted. She wouldn’t have been surprised if he couldn’t sit through the short, ten-minute-drive without dozing off. And she proved to be right. When she parked in front of the Cruz house, the child was fast asleep. She took him in one arm and lifted his little rucksack with the other. Of course, there was also her own bag to take care of. Loaded with things to carry, she stood in front of the door and pressed the doorbell. Evelyn answered the door, and seeing them, hit her hands together.

“So, here you are! I’m so glad.”

“He’s asleep,” Alex mouthed.

“Oh, you poor thing, come let me get Lucca,” she said, smiling, and took the child from her. “Come in. Have a seat, make yourself at home! You have thoroughly worn each other out, by the look of it,” she said laughing, looking back over her shoulder.

“No doubt about it,” she laughed in agreement. “Although I’m surrounded by kids every day, this was very different.”

“Of course it is! Manuel will give you a drink while I tuck the little boy in his bed,” she said, cosily waving towards her husband, who had just come into the living room.

“Alexis, welcome!” said the man, extending a hand.

“Mr Cruz.”

“Just Manuel,” he patted her hand.

“Manuel,” she smiled.

She studied the man attentively and tried to discover similarities between him and Nathaniel. She didn’t find many. His complexion was much darker than his son’s, yet his eyes were obviously lighter. Almost green. Nathaniel had so much more of his mother in him.

“What will you have to drink? Should I mix you a babysitter's recovery cocktail?”
